In this delicious and super fun class, we will be making 5 types of homemade mochi dishes! -First, you will enjoy a bowl of authentic mochi in a savory traditional Japanese New Year's Ozoni soup. Kaori or her mom will discuss the history of mochi, and you will get to see how this real mochi is made from sweet rice grains, and using a Japanese machine. -Second, we will make Ichigo Daifuku mochi; mochi filled with red bean paste and fresh strawberries. -Third, we will make a flavorful green tea mochi -Fourth, you will get a choice to make delicious vanilla flavored or matcha green tea flavored mochi donuts from scratch! -Fifth, we will make green tea ice cream mochi! Chocolate, sweet red bean paste, and strawberries will be available for mochi fillings. Feel free to bring any of your own that you would like to try (i.e. mango, banana, peanut butter, etc!). We will enjoy our mochi together and the best part is that we provide to-go containers so that you can take home lots of mochi to friends and family! Menu: - Ozoni savory New Year's Mochi Soup (includes chicken stock, fish) Ice Cream Mochi (strawberry or green tea) -Daifuku Mochi with fresh strawberry -Green Tea Mochi -Vanilla or green tea mochi donut This class will be taught by either myself or my talented Japanese mother, Yukiko Zinke, who has been making mochi from scratch for many years. Originally from the Bay Area, Kaori Becker is a cooking instructor and owner of Kaori's Kitchen cooking school and catering. Drawing from her Japanese roots, Kaori has taught culinary classes and demonstrations in Columbus, Ohio at the Franklin Park Conservatory and The Seasoned Farmhouse, as well as Kitchen on Fire in Berkeley, Draeger's School in San Francisco, and at other Oakland locations. "Ka-o-ri" means "fragrance" in Japanese, and Kaori has always been passionate about recreating delicious, fragrant dishes from her Japanese tradition, enjoying local farm-to-table eating, and sharing sumptuous food memories with friends and family. Her specialty originates in Japanese food, growing up as a half-Japanese woman and learning how to cook traditional Japanese meals and desserts from her mother, who is a first generation full-Japanese. These authentic Japanese recipes have been passed down to Kaori through her Japanese grandparents who owned an authentic ramen noodle shop in the countryside of Fukushima, Japan. Kaori's business, Kaori's Kitchen, focuses on providing Japanese cooking classes and private parties to people in the Bay Area using seasonal, local and organic ingredients. Kaori also currently directs and runs 2 culinary programs for private schools in San Leandro and Oakland. She lives in the Bay Area with her husband and animator Alan Becker.
